VERRA CARBON CREDITING - ALUMINIUM CAN RECYCLING Project

Overview

The client operates a large-scale aluminum can recycling facility, targeting cans that would otherwise be produced from virgin aluminum ore—a process that is highly energy- and emission-intensive.

Recognizing the potential for carbon credit generation, the client engaged CarboSol to assess and register the project under an internationally recognized carbon crediting standard.

Our Role

Initial Assessment:
CarboSol began with a technical and eligibility assessment to determine whether the project qualified for carbon credits. This included:

  • Analyzing the recycling operations and inputs
  • Estimating GHG emissions reduction
  • Matching the most applicable methodology
  • Assessing financial and operational feasibility for Verra registration

Methodology Selection:
After analyzing various options, we selected AMS-III.AJ due to its alignment with the project’s structure and the emissions savings potential of avoiding aluminum ore processing.

Project Description Development (PDD):
We led the preparation of the Project Description Document (PDD), ensuring:

  • Alignment with Verra’s VCS program requirements
  • Accurate baseline scenario and additionality demonstration
  • Robust data documentation for recyclables collection, sorting, and reprocessing
  • Stakeholder engagement plan
  • Monitoring methodology and plan

Stakeholder Coordination & Support:
We also provided ongoing coordination with Verra, third-party validators, and the client’s internal teams to keep documentation on track and accelerate progress toward listing.

Results & Expected Impact

  • GHG Reductions: The project is expected to reduce emissions by over 321,000 tCO₂e per year, a substantial contribution to climate mitigation in the region.

  • Waste Diversion: Significant quantities of post-consumer waste are diverted from landfills and re-enter the supply chain as recycled aluminum.

  • Revenue Potential: The carbon credits can provide an additional revenue stream to support and expand recycling operations.

  • Scalability: The success of this project has opened the door to expanding similar projects across the client’s other recycling operations.

Why It Matters

This case highlights CarboSol’s capability in:

  • Rapid eligibility analysis and feasibility modeling

  • Matching the right methodology to the right project

  • Navigating complex carbon standards and preparing high-quality documentation

  • Delivering real value through climate finance mechanisms
